NATIONAL CHILDREN’S SCIENCE CONGRESS (NCSC)

Introduction

The National Children’s Science Congress (NCSC) is a flagship programme of the National Council for Science and Technology Communication (NCSTC), functioning under the Department of Science and Technology, Government of India.

It is a nationwide science communication and education initiative aimed at promoting scientific temper among children and encouraging them to engage in hands-on research and innovation.

Background and Evolution

  • The programme originated at the grassroots level in Madhya Pradesh through efforts of science organizations and was later expanded nationally by NCSTC.
  • It has been conducted since 1993 as part of NCSTC’s science popularisation programmes.
  • It is now one of the largest science outreach programmes for school students in India.

Organising Agency: NCSTC, DST

Role of NCSTC

The NCSTC is responsible for:

  • Popularising science and technology among the masses
  • Promoting scientific thinking and rationality
  • Developing communication tools such as exhibitions, films, and training programmes

NCSC is one of its major initiatives to reach young learners and nurture future scientists.

Objectives of NCSC

The core objective is to:

  • Provide a platform for children (10–17 years) to demonstrate creativity and innovation
  • Encourage them to identify local problems and solve them using scientific methods
Specific Objectives
  1. Develop scientific temper
    • Promote observation, experimentation, and logical reasoning
  2. Encourage problem-solving
    • Focus on local societal and environmental issues
  3. Promote learning by doing
    • Projects involve fieldwork, surveys, and experimentation
  4. Link science with daily life
    • Help children relate science to their surroundings
  5. Inclusivity
    • Open to both school-going and out-of-school children, including differently-abled participants

Key Features of the Programme

(a) Age Group

  • Children aged 10 to 17 years participate

(b) Project-Based Approach

Participants:

  • Identify a local issue
  • Formulate hypotheses
  • Collect data and conduct experiments
  • Suggest feasible solutions

(c) Multi-level Participation

The programme is conducted in stages:

  1. District Level
  2. State Level
  3. National Level

Top projects from states are selected for the national event.

(d) Annual Theme

  • Each year, a specific theme is given (e.g., environment, health, technology, sustainability)
  • Ensures focus on current societal challenges

Scientific Method Emphasis

NCSC strongly emphasizes the scientific process, including:

  • Observation
  • Questioning
  • Hypothesis formation
  • Experimentation
  • Data analysis
  • Conclusion and innovation

Participation and Scale

  • Around 7–8 lakh students participate annually across India

Participation spans:

  • Rural and urban areas
  • Different linguistic and cultural backgrounds

Educational and Social Significance

(a) Promotion of Scientific Temper

  • Aligns with the constitutional duty to develop scientific temper

(b) Grassroots Innovation

  • Encourages solutions to local problems, such as:
    • Water conservation
    • Waste management
    • Agriculture issues

(c) Skill Development

  • Enhances:
    • Critical thinking
    • Research skills
    • Communication abilities

(d) Exposure to Scientific Community

  • Students interact with:
    • Scientists
    • Academicians
    • Innovators

Outcomes and Impact

  • Identifies and nurtures young scientific talent
  • Promotes research orientation at an early age
  • Some student projects have practical applications in local communities
  • Builds a foundation for future careers in science and technology

The National Children’s Science Congress is a unique grassroots-level science movement in India. By combining education, research, and social relevance, it plays a crucial role in developing scientific awareness, encouraging innovation, and building a scientifically informed society.

It reflects the vision of NCSTC and DST to make science accessible, participatory, and socially meaningful.
